May 1 in Labor History

In 1974 on this day, Congress enacted amendments to the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act, extending protections to employees of state and local governments – protections which didn’t take effect until 1985 because of court challenges and regulation-writing problems.

And it's the birthday of Mary Harris "Mother" Jones (pictured), born on May 1, 1830, in County Cork, Ireland.
